If you want to understand why your septic tank might need a pump-out, it’s handy to know a bit about how traditional septic tanks work.

When you flush your toilet, the waste travels through your pipes and settles in your septic tank. The first tank captures the solids and the liquid travels through to the second tank. This happens by having a “square” or vertical down pipe on the inside of the tank where the waste comes in and goes out. The solids float, the scum drops to the bottom and the liquid goes up the vertical pipe on the exit side and flows through to the second tank.

If the solids or scum build up too much they will flow through to the second tank, which is normally a bit smaller. This will capture the solids from going to the most important part of your system, the leach drains.  If the tank fills too high, wastewater can reach the leach drains, causing blockages and backup inside the home. Regular septic tank emptying prevents this.
