On 10^th June, a major sewer main burst in Spearwood, releasing over 1.3 million litres of raw sewage into nearby streets, drains, and front yards. What started as a sudden rupture in Water Corporation’s 450mm pressure main quickly turned into a massive public health and environmental emergency affecting the surrounding suburbs of Beaconsfield, Hamilton Hill, and parts of Fremantle.

Residents described the smell as “worse than a public toilet”, with human waste, toilet paper, and brown water flooding footpaths, driveways, and stormwater drains. Some properties had raw sewage pooling in their yards, while emergency responders and contractors like Waroona Septics raced to contain the flow.

According to Water Corporation, the pipe had shown no prior signs of failure, and the cause of the rupture is still under investigation. The scale and speed of the spill overwhelmed the surrounding infrastructure, with multiple vacuum tankers, environmental health officers, and contractors brought in to manage the cleanup.
